Volunteering and Staff

We would not be able to run the Swanage Railway without our fantastic team of over 400 volunteers, who are responsible for everything from running trains, keeping our stations looking great to selling tickets & refreshments and much, much more.

You might be retired and are looking for ways to stay active and meet new people, or perhaps you’re still in work but want to gain new skills and try something different to the day job. Either way volunteering with us is a great way to contribute to the community and to become involved in something rewarding, social and worthwhile.

Despite what you might think you don’t even need to be a train fanatic to enjoy yourself here. We have a wide range of positions available so a simple smile and a positive attitude is usually a great start!

Block 1

Our friendly team can undertake all the training to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable volunteering experience with us, no matter what aspect of the railway you choose to get involved with, and there are support staff on-hand every day that you choose to help this motivated team.

For many roles, there is no minium commitment.

For some operational aspects of the railway (such as footplate crew, signaller, guard or porter) we ask you undertake this reasonably frequently to ensure you remain competent, and our friendly volunteer liaison officer can discuss this further with you.

Our aim is always to ensure you have an enjoyable and rewarding volunteering experience, no matter what aspect of our friendly multidiscipline team you choose to get involved with.

More details on the opportunities available and how to become a member of our volunteer team are on the Swanage Railway Charitable Trust’s Website
