The Swanage Railway is actively looking for new volunteers to join its Operations Department, including Engine Cleaners, Trainee Porters/Guards and Trainee Signalman

The Swanage Railway is fulfilling the purpose it was built for in the 1800's; as a busy seaside railway. It relies on its mainly volunteer workforce to enable it to operate one of the most intensive private railway services in Britain, and prides itself on being able to efficiently operate this service.

In order to support this though, we are looking for all types of person, regardless of age, gender or previous experience, to get involved with the running of the award winning Swanage Railway.

The Operations Department comprises all the grades involved in operating a train on the Swanage Railway. From Guards and Signalmen, from Engine Cleaners to Firemen and Drivers, they all come within the Operations Department.

If you are interested in joining our happy band of volunteers then please get in touch. We will arrange to show you round, meet our existing volunteers and staff and introduce you to the railway on a personal level.

You may want a new hobby, but be unsure of what you would like to do on the railway?

We will be able to show you the many opportunities that exist within the Department during this induction, and point you into an area that is most suited to you.

This is the opportunity to get involved in our exciting heritage railway NOW!

We are currently actively recruiting in the following grades:-

Engine Cleaners - The first step on the locomotive department ladder. Promotion to Swanage Railway Fireman and Driver is possible, and full training is given. No experience necessary for the chance to work on our fantastic collection of steam and diesel locomotives, and see what is involved in keeping these locomotives running in the 21st Century.

For more details please contact the Operations Office direct on 01929 475203.

Trainee Porters/Guards - Become the public face of the railway, meeting and greeting our visitors but also ensuring the safety of train operations. Guards are in charge of the train, responsible for ensuring the safety of it and its passengers, and ensuring the punctual running of our efficient train service.

For more details please contact the Operations Office direct on 01929 475203.

Trainee Signalman - The Swanage Railway's Signalman training school is considered to be one of the best in preservation. If you would like to join the next class please contact Mike Whitwam on 01929 475212 or e-mail him at [email protected]

Successful completion of the training school will allow you to work our award winning signalboxes at Swanage, Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle, and allow you to take a principal role in the safe and efficient running of our train service.

Whether you have previous experience or not, you will be given a warm welcome on the Swanage Railway. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss this further, please contact the Operations Office on 01929 475203.
