Swanage Railway passes through some of Dorset’s most beautiful and environmentally significant landscapes. Throughout the year, our staff and volunteers work hard to care for the stations, embankments, and surrounding land, helping to protect and enhance the rich wildlife habitats found along the line.

As a result, the railway is home to an impressive variety of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and other wildlife. The illustration highlights just some of the species that can be seen around the railway, showcasing the rich biodiversity that thrives across the varied habitats along the route.

Next time you travel on the railway, keep your eyes open and see how many of the featured species you can spot. From colourful butterflies and busy dragonflies to birds of prey and elusive reptiles, there's always something to discover beyond the railway tracks.
