VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OFFICER

PASSIONATE ABOUT HERITAGE RAILWAYS

Swanage Railway is an award winning railway carrying over 200,000 passengers a year, on its
heritage services, making it one of the leading tourist attractions in Dorset. It has around 450
volunteers across its departments.


In 2021 Swanage Railway (SR) obtained a grant from South Western Railway (SWR) to fund this
position. In addition to working with SR volunteers, the work includes supporting volunteers
across SWR stations from Dorchester South to Holton Health, of which Purbeck Community Rail
Partnership (PCRP) is responsible.


As the current post holder has secured a role elsewhere on the Swanage Railway, we need to
engage another individual to continue this much valued role. This will assist SR and PCRP to
achieve its vision, not only to maintain but enhance its volunteer presence and to develop
further services.


The role
The successful applicant will be expected to continue with a successful, established recruiting
process for volunteers across the Railways in a variety of different roles. To communicate and
monitor progress of the volunteers and advise Management where changes can improve
volunteer engagement.


The VRRO will also work with PCRP representatives in the management of volunteers at
Holton Heath, Wareham, Wool and Dorchester South, with the possibility of working with other
adjacent stations.


To achieve this a self-motivated individual is required with experience of successful volunteer
engagement and knowledge of recruiting and supporting volunteers.An ability to understand
and administer records on a database is required. Good communication skills are essential.

The person

  • Experience and knowledge of successful volunteer engagement
  • Knowledge of the workings of Swanage Railway.
  • Quantifiable experience and knowledge of recruiting and supporting volunteers at all
  • levels
  • Ability to understand and administer records on a database is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Holder of full driving licence as position is multi based
