The End of Southern Steam Weekend – 60 Years On

9th Jul - 11th Jul 2027

On the 9th July 1967, steam disappeared from British Rail’s Southern Region, bringing to a close an era that had defined railway travel for generations. Sixty years later, Swanage Railway will turn back the clock to tell that story once again.

Across three days, experience the changing face of the railway as we recreate the transition from steam to diesel.

The weekend will begin with steam firmly in charge, before the balance gradually shifts as diesel traction begins to appear. By the end of the weekend, the transformation will be complete recreating the moment when the sights, sounds and rhythms of the steam railway gave way to a new generation.
