Volunteering and Staff


Swanage Railway relies on volunteers who are essential to ensure we can operate trains on Dorset’s premier heritage railway.

Our friendly team always have a warm welcome for new faces and there is a myriad of tasks and opportunities that you can help us with, including many non-railway aspects.

You don’t need any prior railway experience because we have all the people and skills to train you to undertake all aspects of the railway’s operations.

Our friendly team can undertake all the training to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable volunteering experience with us, no matter what aspect of the railway you choose to get involved with, and there are support staff on-hand every day that you choose to help this motivated team.

There is no minimum commitment, you can come down as often as you wish.

For some operational aspects of the railway (such as Driver, Fireman, Signalman and Guards) we ask you undertake this reasonably frequently to ensure you remain competent, and our friendly volunteer liaison officer can discuss this further with you.

Our aim is always to ensure you have an enjoyable and rewarding volunteering experience, no matter what aspect of our friendly multidiscipline team you choose to get involved with.

Passenger Services Assistants (Seasonal)

Swanage Railway is an award winning heritage railway carrying 200,000 passengers a year, making it one of the leading tourist attractions in Dorset.

Working as part of a team, you will join people who are passionate about the delivery of exceptional service to our visitors.

The Role

We are seeking to recruit 4 seasonal Passenger Services Assistants (either April to September, April to October or April to December) to play a key role in ensuring our passengers and visitors have a great time with us.

Working within our Passenger Services Department you’ll be part of a team, selling tickets at our Stations and on our trains, promoting positive and memorable relationships with our passengers, and, of course ensuring that they have safe and enjoyable journeys.

The Person

Using personality to bring life to a role with

• Great ‘people’ skills.

• Enthusiasm and a ‘can-do’ attitude.

• Experience of customer service by phone and /or face to face

• Telephone and face to face retail sales experience.

• Ability to communicate positively.

• An unflustered approach to work in very busy periods.

Benefits of working for Swanage Railway.

• Hourly rate of £9.72 per hour, 40-hour week. (Must be willing to work flexible hours and days).

• 30 days holiday including statutory bank holidays. (Pro rata)
