Swanage Railway is an award winning heritage railway carrying 200,000 passengers a year, making it one of the leading tourist attractions in Dorset.

Working as part of a team, you’ll join people who are passionate about maintaining our heritage Permanent Way infrastructure

The role

 

As a Permanent Way Operative you’ll play an important role in ensuring the track of the railway is maintained in a manner that ensures the safe passage of trains on our railway.  

 

You will have the opportunity to put your skills to use through carrying out the maintenance, repair and overhaul of our track and its environs.  Working as part of a team, you will follow required procedures to complete tasks, to a high standard and on time to ensure the smooth running of our timetable.  Following good practice and playing your part in promoting a safe operating environment will also be key aspects of the role.

 

Working within our Permanent Way Department will give you the opportunity to gain a unique insight into the technical aspects of operating a heritage railway and working within a charitable ‘volunteer led’ organisation with a strong focus on improving services. There is opportunity to make your mark as part of a varied team of volunteers and employees.

 

The person

  • Experience in a civil engineering environment.
  • Practical experience of outdoor manual work
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent with a minimum of 3 subjects, including Maths and English
  • Self-reliant but also a team player with a positive attitude to working with both volunteers and staff to solve problems constructively
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude along with an honest and pragmatic approach to work
