Cancellation of Autumn Steam Gala

Swanage Railway regrets to announce the cancellation of the Autumn Steam Gala 13th - 15th October 2017.

Trevor Parsons Chairman of the Swanage Railway Company and Gavin Johns Chairman of the Swanage Railway Trust issued the following statement.

Since the unfortunate incident in July involving two of our locomotives, we have struggled to run a steam service on many days. Although we have operated every scheduled train, on many days this has been using diesel traction, a situation that is unacceptable to many of our customers, our volunteers and staff. Our contingency plans came unstuck with the discovery of the unserviceability of the T9 locomotive when we were preparing it for service.

It is important to restore services gradually and at a managed and measured pace without the very considerable pressure of preparing and delivering the Autumn Steam Gala. For that reason the Autumn Steam Gala has been cancelled. This will be a disappointment to many and we most sincerely apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused. Please note though the Ivatt locomotive 41312 will still be operating on the railway that weekend. UPDATE 12TH OCTOBER LOCO WITHDRAWN DUE TO SPRING FAILURE.

Please be assured We are making every effort to provide a regular steam service for our published timetable through the coming weeks.
