Swanage Railway volunteer Mike Stollery writes:

Here are two photos of Bulleid-designed Corridor Composite carriage number S5761S on the pad at Norden after return from Rampart, Derby, following its £80,000 mechanical and structural overhaul on Friday 2nd July 2010, and four photos of the carriage on Monday 5th July during its move from Norden down the line to Swanage.

S5761S will remain in Swanage overnight and then be moved to Harman's Cross on Tuesday 6th July to be shunted next to Harmans Cross today to be coupled to BG 84140. The reason for this is that the BG will be used as a workshop to enable 5761's interior work to be completed elsewhere than in the Goods Shed. 4365 is due to move back to Swanage either this or next week to complete its own restoration over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

There remains about 12 months work for Swanage Railway Carriage & Wagon volunteers* to complete it, and an Appeal has been launched to fund its completion and to fund the third of the four Bulleid coaches here

The carriage was purchased privately from mainline service with British Rail in 1970 in complete passenger carrying condition, but in need of a complete mechanical and structural overhaul.

Resident on the Mid-Hants Railway from 1978, the carriage was moved to the Swanage Railway in 1985 for overhaul to return it to its first regular passenger carrying use since 1968.

Brake Third coach no. S4365S only needs minor work to complete its own £75,000 restoration.

Pullman Observation Car 14 left the Swanage Railway on Friday 2nd July to go to the Derby contractor as the return load for further work to cure water ingress.

The following four photos were taken on Monday 5th July by Mike Stollery during the move of Bulleid Composite 5761 to Swanage.

For completeness, here is a photo of our fourth Bulleid coach no 1457 a 64 seat open third. This photo was also taken in 2003 before it was tarpaulined - the blue blob on the roof. Subject to funds being found (estimated at £120k) it is thought that this will be the next to be overhauled. Photo Mike Stollery

With the Bulleid coach S5761S moved to Swanage by class 33 No.33103 'Swordfish' in the morning, the pad at Norden was clear for the return of the class 108 DMU coach M51933 from Eastleigh. After being unable to return to Swanage by rail, with No.30777 Sir Lamiel and the DMUs other coach M54504 in May, Allelys Heavy Haulage transported the remaining coach by road: at Norden on Monday 5th July 2010. The following morning on Tuesday July 6th, class 33 No.33103 'Swordfish' returned to Norden to collect M51933 to be taken down to Swanage. Hopefully the two units will be again paired together soon to complete the DMU set, ready for use on service trains once more...
