The Mayor of Swanage, Cllr Bill Trite, spoke about how the coming of the railway
had reinvigorated Swanage. His speech included many amusing anecdotes such as the fact that
The Duke of Wellington (hero of The Battle of Waterloo) disapproved of the coming of railways as they
would 'encourage the common people to move about needlessly'.
