Battle of Britain class Bulleid Pacific No 34070 Manston is lifted at Eastleigh works.
Battle of Britain class Bulleid Pacific No 34070 Manston was running hot on all four axleboxes of the leading bogie when it arrived at Eastleigh Works for the Eastleigh 100 event. After the event and whilst still at the Works the opportunity was taken to lift the loco and remove the bogie for further examination and attention. Rebuilt Battle of Britain class Bulleid Pacific No. 34089 602 Squadron was the last steam locomotive to be overhauled by British Railways at its Eastleigh Works in September 1966 - the month that saw steam trains between Wareham, Corfe Castle and Swanage replaced by a three-coach 'Hampshire' diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU). After making railway history at Eastleigh Works in the autumn of 1966, Sunday 18th June 1967, saw 602 Squadron haul the last steam train between Wareham and Swanage - being at the head of a Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RTCS) end of steam special from London to Swanage. No. 34089 was on the Swanage end of the long 12-coach train while on the Wareham end was Standard Class 4 Tank No. 80146 which had been a regular performer on the Swanage branch between 1964 and 1966.
