Following months of rebuilding work by a team of predominantly Army volunteers led by Frank Roberts, the new platform at Herston Halt was officially reopened on Saturday 30th May 2009 by the Mayor of Swanage, Councillor Mike Pratt, and Lt Col JAG Langley, the Commanding Officer of 11th Signal Regiment.

For more information on the involvement of the Army with the rebuilding of the Swanage Railway please see the downloadable leaflet at the bottom of the page.

Andrew P.M. Wright and Frank Roberts have supplied nearly 40 photos showing both the opening ceremony at Herston Halt and the celebrations later in Swanage when hundreds of soldiers from 11th Signal Regiment exercised their right to march through Swanage with swords drawn and bayonets fixed. The photos also show some of the work at Herston Halt which made the reopening possible.

As part of the rebuilding work at Herston Halt, the old timber platform was replaced by recycled concrete supports. This major engineering task was carried out during the Swanage railway's annual shutdown period and at night in all weather conditions by the volunteers.
