A nostalgic taste of the Great Western Railway on loan from the Severn Valley Railway, Pannier Tank
class 0-6-0 steam locomotive No. 7714, hauled its first service trains on 5th September 2007 - a wreath being carried on the front of the locomotive in memory of
Swanage Railway stalwart Nona Noble, whose funeral was held on that day.

The wreath being carried on the front of visiting GWR Pannier Tank
class 0-6-0 No. 7714 in memory of
Swanage Railway stalwart Nona Noble, whose funeral was held on 5th September 2007.
Seen carrying the typical ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’ livery of the 1930s, and carrying a wreath in tribute to Nona Noble,
Great Western Railway Pannier Tank
class 0-6-0 wheel arrangement steam locomotive No. 7714 was built in 1930 by Kerr Stuart & Co in Stoke-on-Trent
and is on loan from the Severn Valley Railway in the midlands.
That long established heritage railway was devastated during the floods of June, 2007 – its 16-mile line
being completely cut off in at least ten places after stretches of railway embankment were washed away by
the floodwaters.
Swanage Railway General Manager, Nick Brown, explained: “The Pannier Tanks were a frequent sight at
Weymouth as well as on other lines in west Dorset. While they didn’t regularly operate in southern
England, they did run on the Folkestone Harbour line in Kent and undertook shunting duties and empty
carriage stock workings at London’s Waterloo station.”

Arriving at the Swanage Railway’s road/rail interchange at Norden on a road transporter, the Pannier
Tank was towed down to Swanage by mighty and powerful Class 47 diesel locomotive No. 47 635 built in 1964.
