Work on Harman's Cross embankment March 2007 - Photograph copyright Andrew P.M. Wright
Vital civil engineering maintenance work on the Harman's Cross embankment is been carried out
by the Swanage Railway's specialist permanent way gang led by Tony Andrews.
The work involves replacing a concrete sleeper and rail wall that holds the bottom of the
embankment on the 'up' side with a wall of gabions - very large wire cubes filled with stone.
Reinforcement of Harman's Cross embankment March 2007
Although Tony's team had the assistance of a large rail-mounted hydraulic crane, Andrew's photos clearly
show the back-breaking manual effort needed to get the massive volume of reinforcing stone into the correct position -
work which is vital to the long-term future of the Swanage Railway.
The concrete sleeper and rail wall dates from the winter of 1987 when the tracks from Herston Halt
reached Harman's Cross.
