The Swanage Railway's annual feast of steam took to the rails of the
relaid Purbeck Line in Dorset on Saturday and Sunday, September 9th and 10th, 2006, with an intensive
train service between Swanage, Harman’s Cross, Corfe Castle and Norden park & ride. This year's gala was
very well attended, with good passenger numbers on both days of the event and vistors also able to attend the
Vintage Transport Rally site at Harman's Cross.
In addition to the scheduled passenger services, a range of other movements were arranged as part of the
special event. These included a variety of mixed goods train workings plus the associated shunting manoeuvres.
The weather for the gala and vintage transport rally this year was perfect, and Andrew P.M. Wright's selection of photographs
capture the essence of a working branch railway in the steam era.
Jinty No. 47493 visited the Swanage Railway from the Spa Valley Railway
for the Gala weekend. The engine starred alongside BR Standard 4 tank No. 80078,
GWR 'Taffy' Tank No. 6695 and GWR Pannier Tank No. 6412. Over the weekend,
No 47493 operated trains over the full length of line between Swanage and Norden
as well as the Norden to Corfe Castle shuttle.
Swanage Railway's General Manager,
Nick Brown, said: "Many thanks to all involved in this very successful event.
I thank the staff who have operated the service so reliably
along the length of the line. I also thank the staff in all other departments
who have made the event successful in other ways. Special thanks to those whose work goes largely
unseen but without which events such as the Steam Gala
could not take place".
