Manston 's first unaided passenger train ran on 26 September 2008. The nine-coach test train left Swanage at 6.33pm. The 401 tonne weight of the train included Standard 4 80078 to haul the return leg to Swanage as the length of the train did not allow Manston to run round at Norden.

The painting and lining of the locomotive and tender had been completed in the nick of time and it appeared to be straight out of the box. The train left Norden at 7.10pm for the return leg to Swanage, arriving at 7.47pm.

It had been a five-year break since an unrebuilt Battle of Britain Bullied Pacific had hauled a train on the Swanage line. 34072 257 Squadron had been pulling passenger trains since the early 1990s but had been withdrawn in 2003 for a heavy engineering overhaul by Southern Locomotives in Herston Works.
