Confirmed Locomotive Roster
The current line-up of motive power is as
follows. This may be subject to change for operational reasons.
Swanage-based Locomotives
34070 Manston
Built by the Southern Railway in 1947, unrebuilt Battle of Britain Pacific 34070
Manston returned to steam in 2008. Manston is owned by Southern Locomotives.
34028 Eddystone
34028 Eddystone is a rebuilt West Country Pacific that was built by the
Southern Railway in 1946. During its working life it was based at
Bournemouth and its service included the Somerset & Dorset Railway to
Bath as well as the Swanage line. Like Manston it is owned by Southern Locomotives.
M7 "53"
Built in 1906,53 is the oldest locomotive operating on the Swanage Railway.
During its working life it visited Swanage and hauled the final train on the
"old road" through Ringwood. 53 is owned by Drummond Locomotives.
56xx "6695"
6695 is a 56xx tank built for the Great Western Railway in 1927 by Armstrong Whitworth
in Newcastle. It worked in the Welsh valleys. The locomotive is owned by The 6695 Locomotive Group.
Standard 4MT 80104
80104 is one of a pair of Standard 4MT tanks owned by Southern Locomotives.
80078 is currently out of traffic following the expiration of its boiler certificate.
Both were built at Brighton in the mid-1950s. These two locomotives worked out of
Fenchurch Street although locomotives of the same class did work the Swanage branch.
Visiting Locomotives
Ex-GNR N2 1744
1744 is the only N2 in preservation. It is owned by the Gresley Society and normally
based on the Great Central Railway. M2s typically hauled suburban trains from Kings Cross
and Moorgate in London. 1744 is also a film star having played a role in the film version
of The Railway Children.
Ex-LNER A4 4492 Dominion of New Zealand
4492 was built by the LNER to haul express trains on the East Coast main line to Scotland.
The locomotive was scrapped in 1963. However, underneath the new paint scheme this
locomotive is actually 60019 Bittern that was scrapped in 1966 and returned to steam in
2007. The locomotive is based at Southall in London and is working on mainline railtours.
This is its first visit to a heritage railway as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand.
