Spring Gala 2018 "Works Outing"

Date: 23rd - 25th Mar

‘The Works Outing’, the 2018 Spring Gala, recreates the 1960’s Southern Branch Line scene and the changing atmosphere of British Railways from steam to modern motive power.

‘The Works Outing’ will be a welcome return to regular work for the Drummond-designed T9 ‘30120’, as well as the re-introduction to traffic of Bulleid Pacific ‘34053’ ‘Sir Keith Park’, having returned to the Swanage Railway from the Severn Valley Railway.

The ex-SR Mogul ‘31806’ will be making her first Gala appearance since her overhaul to mainline running standard and will be joined by stalwart tank BR Standard 4MT 80104 (80146).

To highlight the ever-changing face of British Railways during the 1960’s, BR Type 3 (Class 33) D6515 will provide support to our steam locomotives – a regular sight over the Swanage Branch in the final years of original operation.

With an intensive timetable (to follow) in operation and services ‘Over the Road’ on the extension from Norden towards Wareham  there will be plenty of opportunity to ride behind each of our locomotives and enjoy the Swanage Railway on a Spring weekend.

As well as our regular service trains, a ‘Local Set’ formed of Bulleid coaches and van(s) or a milk tank will be in operation, demonstrating the type of mixed services run by British Railways during the final years of steam.
