Basic Steam Driving Course

Date: 9th Jan - 25th Mar

Learn the basics of locomotive handling with our Basic Steam Driving Course.

Based at Swanage station, your day will start at 0930 with a breakfast roll in our Birds Nest Buffet, followed by a safety briefing. 

Over the course of the day our experienced enginemen will teach you the basic principles of driving these fascinating but fundamentally simple machines. The chances are the engine you are driving worked the Swanage branch line over 50 years ago!

Your course will be split into 3 exercises;

  • Exercise 1 - An introduction to the steam locomotive
  • Exercise 2 - Accurate Braking
  • Exercise 3 - Buffering Up.

Lunch will be provided with the course finishing approximately 16.30.

Please note, safety is of upmost importance.

  • Participants must be over 18 years of age.
  • Physically capable of climbing up into the locomotive.
  • You must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • The Driver has the right to refuse travel and refusal will prevent refund.
  • You will be required to complete a health and age declaration.
  • This is an experience and does not represent any official qualification

The course runs on selected dates throughout the year, the inclusive cost for each participant is £195.00.
